This Is How We Do It…..songwriting ORB style

It’s Saturday. My brother from another mother (he has the EXACT birthday as my sister) came in town to get a track written with me and discuss some music biz. So excited. It’s been years since we’ve put pen to paper and I had plenty on my mind to write about. He had a track about a 4th finished and we got to work…….man…this track is FUN-KY. Can’t wait for to share it – sadly, it can only be heard through our headphones since we were in writing mode…..we ALWAYS end up arguing….lol. Guess that’s the fun of collaborating, ha

Here’s another sneak peak of a song almost finished…listen in the background. This is our song “Bad Love” which will be on our Out Roun’ Back album that we are working hard to finish by the end of this year. Hope you like the little snippet….apparently I like to lipsync to myself, ha! Dork.

In other news…..up and coming this week. Singing with The Inspiration Band on the 28th at a private function and got MUUUUCH rehearsing to do for “The Voice” audition next Sunday. Think I’ve narrowed my songs down to Summertime (jazz standard) and/or We Found Love by Rhianna. I’m working on a new website and hopefully later this week I’ll switch to dezdonnell.com!! Will keep you posted. And one more thing……new videos posted on my video page and my youtube channel! If you subscribe on youtube PLEASE go to my channel and subscribe…I would be forever grateful….you can suggest repayment via comments Post your youtube channel and I will subscribe to yours…how ’bout dat. The Voice – Big Girls Rock, pt. deaux

I’ve been watching The Voice off and on this season and caught the semi-finals this past Monday to see who was left of the pack. I was excited to see our two plus size beauties are still getting some love!

Erin Willett was beautiful as usual, but sadly I did not enjoy her performance as much as the crowd and judges did. The judges clearly ignored the fact that the entire song was pitchy and out of tune…yes, it was emotional, but it wasn’t pitchy a little here and there….it was all over the place from beginning to end. I bet she went home last night….didn’t catch the elimination show.

Katrina Parker is getting better and stronger vocally….I definitely see so much more confidence. I love her tone but her style is REALLY really close to Adele’s, the way she breaks up her phrasing and consonants….I would be interested to hear something she’s recorded pre-Adele to see if that was always her personal vocal style.

I just love the fact that America is showing them love and proving that if you have a great voice, no one cares about your size. The music industry hasn’t adopted this view as of yet, but hopefully they’ll see the light soon…..and we can add the age factor to that as well.

My favorites this year are that young guy on Cee-Lo’s team….2nd is probably Tony Lucca….and then 3rd that raspy female rock singer. Who are your favorite singers this season and who do you think will win?

The Voice – BIG GIRLS ROCK!

Last nights show made me proud of 2 plus size beauties! These battle rounds can be really unfair matches and strange song choices but I was so excited to see these 2 beautiful and talented women get a spotlight on national tv proving that there is an audience and place for singers that aren’t 19 and size 4 prancing around in booty shorts and stripper heals.

Adele has truly helped pave the way for some acceptance…but I seriously doubt she would’ve broken through if from the US.  Europe is so much more open than Americans to diverse music and appearance. They don’t choose their music based on what is force fed to them by top 40 radio stations like ours that play the same handful of artists over and over and OVER. I have dealt with discrimination first hand on being a plus size woman. I have been told to my face, we LOVE your voice…but “you don’t have the whole package”. Meaning…you don’t look like a model and you’re too old.

I’m excited the US  is getting to see some big girls with big voices, and they ARE BEAUTIFUL to look at!!

Take a look at this porcelain faced, red wild- maned, blue-eyed beauty, Erin Willett.

And here’s the other plus sized beauty, Katrina Parker. She has this cute retro style and vocally she definitely is reminiscent of Adele but has her own personal flourishes.

Thank you to The Voice for exposing the US to talent that isn’t packaged up as only being under 25 and size 6! I hope these girls gain a huge following
!!

Bye Bye X Factor, Bye Bye The Voice auditions……

Well, as most of you know I had a little health scare with a large cyst/mass and have been recovering slowly from surgery 3 weeks ago. Me being the stubborn person that I am always tries to do more than I should…I don’t like to moan about pain and always try to keep right on trucking along.

So…I was really hoping I’d be up for The Voice auditions in Atlanta this weekend….but this being my first full week back to work,  going to Atlanta was out of the question, I opted to shoot for The X Factor season 2  audition next week in Austin. Well, I got a reality check when I sang 2 songs last friday night at Button’s with the K2K band. No stamina, huffing and puffing. The audience really loved me and several people asked if I was going to sing anymore songs that night…which really made me feel great…but sadly I was done. 2 had did me in physically. I had a long talk with myself this weekend and decided I am not in shape for auditions right now. Very hard to admit that. I wouldn’t be giving my best audition and don’t know if I could even make it TO audition after standing in line for hours and hours ….and HOURS. Does standing in line for hours count as “strenuous activity”? Because there is “no strenuous activity for 6 weeks after surgery” per my doctor. Crap, I think that would be strenuous.

2 huge opportunities for 2012 passing me by.

So I am forging ahead. Maybe it was meant to be, right?! Timing is everything.

Goal: Get stronger, healthier. Gain stamina.

Goal: Improve vocal range. *side note* Oddly…..through this surgery I discovered a vocal hinderance I had no idea about. Once they got the camera in my abdomen, they discovered an entire blanket of scar tissue that had pushed organs to places they shouldn’t be…..like pushing on my lungs and diaphragm. So now that the majority of the scar tissue has been removed, I am able to breathe a lot deeper and that should help vocally!

Next goal:  learn an enormous amount of cover songs (like 3 hours worth). I have a couple of bands that want me to gig with them but my reperoitore is very limited from being “out of the game” for 2 years. Now it’s like I’m cramming for a final exam trying to learn new songs, songs from 2 years ago, figuring out the arrangements, keys, etc.

Yet another goal: Record more videos of me singing to amp up this blog and my YouTube channel! This one should be FUN! I plan on some videos with Zetti, doing one with my Mom, one  with my hubby, and some other musician and singer friends I have….collabs are always fun 🙂

One more music goal and I’ll stop for now…..write some new material! This past weekend my producer friend, G-Jack, let me hear some of his amazing tracks and wanted me to do some recording. Well, one thing led to another and the song about “Young Girls” he had written to this track….well, let’s just say I shouldn’t be singing about young girls. So…that prompted me to get out my book o’ lyrics. It’s been probably 5 years or more since I’ve penned a song. I’ve been dead in the water. Uninspired, depressed, not interested. This was really exciting…..we started working on melodies, got a fully written bridge and even laid some scratch vocals and almost have the 2 verses and chorus written! I’ll be excited to share this with you soon!

So raise your imaginary glass with me to Spring and Summer and all the wonderful things STILL ahead for this year! It’s not too late to get some big things done…..Dez.

Music on TV: this generation and Idol, Glee, Smash, The Voice, AGT and YouTube

It’s amazing to me how music in America is really in the forefront right now, especially on TV. I’ve never, in my lifetime, seen sooo many shows centered around this one performance medium, music. You have American Idol, The Voice, America’s Got Talent, Glee, and now a new show Smash with AI’s Katherine McPhee.

As a singer, I have to admit that I’m addicted to watching these shows and have auditioned for The Voice, America’s Got Talent and X-Factor and really got a good behind the scenes look at how they work.  MANY of the auditionees you see don’t actually stand in line with the masses and have what they call a “scheduled audition”. They are professional artists that already have a manager, label, or some sort of representation. These are not a mature singers. Some of this business is STILL “who you know”. And ALOT of it is image, not talent. So if you have image+talent…you have a far better chance of a successful, sustainable career in music.

So did everyone catch the 1st episode of The Voice last night?  I have two personal acquaintances on there, which is really wierd-cool! I am definitely seeing a lot higher quality talent this year on Idol and on The Voice and I have a little theory as to why.

Teens now have access to so much more material and informational training with YouTube, and the internet in general.  I wasn’t exposed to jazz, R&B, etc growing up – if your parents didn’t listen to it – you never heard it. My household was filled with black gospel music….that was it. We weren’t allowed to listen to the radio, or “secular” music. I heard it only at the skating rink and occasionally at friends houses where I would tape songs on the radio and sneak it home for my headphones.  Teens are now exposed to anything and everything and so they have, in my opinion, become more seasoned sounding singers and have access to vocal lessons online, tips, and more. They can pull up videos of Ella Fitgerald, Patti Labelle in concert, Brett Manning singing lessons, stage presence tips, artists from Europe that never get airplay on our radio stations – they can find it all. We had none of that and had to learn only through our surroundings and connections, which took YEARS of life learning and experience. Things have really changed!

Does anyone have any comments on these shows so far?? I would love to hear what you think – as time goes by I may blog more specifically on these shows and singers in particular I really like…or don’t!
